Almost every used car checklist you will find repeats the same advice: check the engine, check the tyres, take a test drive. That is not wrong, but it is not useful either — it tells you where to look without telling you what you are looking for. This guide is written the other way round. For each check it says what a healthy car looks like, what a problem looks like, and how much the problem should change what you pay.
Set the inspection up properly first
Three conditions matter more than anything on the list below, and sellers who have something to hide will try to avoid all three.
- Daylight, not evening. Paint mismatch, panel ripple and hail dimpling are close to invisible under streetlights or showroom spots. Look at horizontal panels from a low angle with light raking across them.
- Dry ground, and the car parked there a while. You want to see whether it has left drips. Ask the seller not to move it before you arrive.
- Engine stone cold. A pre-warmed engine hides cold-start smoke, rattles, injector noise and hard starting. If you arrive and the bonnet is warm, come back another day.
If a seller resists all three of these, you have learned something before you have looked at the car.
Flood damage: check this first
This is the most commonly concealed serious fault in the Indian used car market, and the most consequential. Chennai in 2015 and 2023, Kerala in 2018, Mumbai most monsoons, and the Krishna and Ganga basins routinely put large numbers of cars under water. Many are dried, valeted and resold looking perfectly normal. The damage shows up months later as electrical faults that cannot be traced and corrosion that cannot be stopped.
It takes five minutes to check:
- Spare wheel well. Lift the boot floor. This is the lowest point in the body and where silt settles. Look for dried mud, a tide line, or rust in a car too young to have it.
- Seat belts, pulled all the way out. Extend a front belt to its full length and look at the webbing near the end. Water leaves a distinct discoloured line that is almost never cleaned because nobody thinks to pull the belt out.
- Under the carpet at the footwells. Peel back the mat and the carpet underlay. Look for staining, silt, or surface rust on the bolt heads and seat rails.
- Smell. Sit inside with the doors shut and the AC off for two minutes. A musty or heavily perfumed interior — especially one that has obviously just been detailed — deserves suspicion.
- Electrical exercise. Operate every window, mirror, lock, light, wiper setting and the infotainment. Flood-damaged wiring fails intermittently rather than outright, so work everything twice.
Confirmed flood damage is a walk-away, not a negotiation. Ask the seller directly whether the car has ever been in standing water and watch how the question lands.
Accident repair: read the body, not the seller
Nearly every used car has had some paintwork. What matters is whether the repair was cosmetic or structural.
Panel gaps
Walk around the car and look at the gaps between panels — bonnet to wing, door to door, boot to rear quarter. They should be even along their length and symmetrical side to side. A gap that tapers, or a bonnet that sits proud on one side, means panels have been off the car or the shell has moved.
Paint
Look along each panel from the front corner of the car, not square on. Original factory paint has a consistent texture; resprayed panels often show slight orange-peel, overspray on rubber seals, or a colour that matches in shade but not in metallic flake. Check inside the door shuts and under the boot lid where painters are less careful.
Bolts and seams
Open the bonnet and boot and look at the bolt heads holding the wings and hinges. Factory bolts have undisturbed paint over them. Tool marks or fresh paint on a bolt head means the panel has been removed. Then look at the welded seams inside the engine bay and boot: factory welds are neat and evenly spaced, repair welds rarely are.
The structural line
Cosmetic repair to a wing or bumper is normal and should cost you a modest discount. Repair to the chassis rails, the A-pillars, the strut towers or the floor pan is different — it affects crash safety and alignment permanently. Look for kinks, ripples or fresh underseal in the engine bay rails and inside the boot. This is a walk-away.
Odometer: does the wear match the number?
Digital clusters have made rollback easier, not harder. The number is a claim; the car is the evidence.
- Pedal rubbers. A car showing 40,000 km should have pedal rubbers with visible tread. Worn-smooth pedals with a low reading mean one of the two is lying — and note that a suspiciously new set of pedal rubbers is its own signal.
- Steering wheel and gear knob. Shine on the wheel rim at the ten and two positions, and a worn gear knob, take real distance to develop.
- Driver's seat bolster. The outer edge of the driver's seat wears from getting in and out. Heavy collapse or splitting on a low-mileage car does not add up.
- Service records. Every stamp should show a date and a reading, and the sequence should climb steadily. Gaps of two years, or a reading that jumps oddly, need explaining.

Engine: the cold start is the test
Stand at the back of the car and have the seller start it while you watch the exhaust.

With the engine off and cold, also check: oil on the dipstick (honey to dark brown is fine; a grey emulsion on the cap or dipstick suggests coolant mixing), coolant colour in the expansion tank (should be clean, not brown and cloudy), and belts for cracking. On the running engine, listen for a rhythmic tapping that rises with revs, and for any rattle in the first two seconds after start — timing chain wear announces itself exactly there.
Gearbox, clutch and drivetrain
- Manual clutch bite point. If it engages in the last inch of pedal travel, the clutch is near the end of its life. In heavy-traffic cities this is normal wear, not a defect — but it is a real cost coming.
- Clutch slip test. In third gear at low speed, accelerate firmly. If revs rise faster than road speed, the clutch is slipping.
- Automatic shifts. Shifts should be smooth and unhurried. Flare between gears, a thump on engagement, or shuddering at light throttle around 40 km/h are all expensive signals.
- Synchros. Cold second gear is where worn synchros crunch. Test it in the first two minutes of driving, not after twenty.
Suspension, steering and brakes
Push down hard on each corner and release: the car should settle in one rebound, not continue bouncing. Look behind the wheels for oily film on the strut bodies. On the drive, find a straight, flat stretch and briefly relax your grip — a car that pulls consistently to one side has an alignment or suspension issue, and a car that tramlines heavily may have mismatched or badly worn tyres.
Brake from about 60 km/h firmly. You want a straight stop with no pulsing through the pedal. Judder means warped discs; a pull to one side means a sticking caliper. Both are fixable and both are legitimate price levers.
Check all five tyres, including the spare, for date codes (a four-digit stamp giving week and year) and wear pattern. Wear on the inner or outer edge only points to alignment or suspension geometry problems rather than simple age.
The test drive
Twenty minutes minimum, and it must include a stretch above 60 km/h. Many faults — wheel imbalance, alignment pull, gearbox whine, wind noise from poorly refitted panels — do not appear at city speeds.
- Drive the first two minutes with the radio and AC off, windows up. Listen.
- Turn the wheel full lock both ways at low speed and listen for clicking, which points to CV joints.
- Run the AC at idle in the heat and check it still cools when the car is stationary, not just moving.
- Reverse and brake sharply once, to load the suspension differently.
- Finish by parking and checking underneath for anything that has started dripping.

Before you pay anything
Physically match the chassis (VIN) and engine numbers on the car against the RC. The chassis number is usually stamped under the bonnet, on the firewall, or under the driver's seat or carpet flap; the RC lists both. If either does not match, stop — this is where genuinely serious problems live.
